Standing Up For Jesus |
|
|
Are you old enough to remember singing "Stand up, Stand Up for Jesus" in the morning worship service as a child? This song doesn't seem to make the morning worship service too much anymore. It is important to take a stand for Jesus Christ in our life as Christians. With the world competing for our attention, we somtimes get distracted from who we follow in the decisions of life.
The world has very different values when it comes to making judgments about being success in life and spirituality. There are plenty of views on what is acceptable before God's judgment seat. Some say that we just need to try hard enough to keep the 10 Commandments. Others say follow the Golden Rule. There are those who think that if you can only become enlightened enough from study of mystical ideas or experiences that you will be able to commune with angels and eventually God Himself. And let us not forget those that think if you only deny yourself the pleasures of the flesh and seek to be humble that somehow God will accept your self imposed worship as the standard by which He must let you into Heaven.
Well, this is not anything new to the Bible. The apostle Paul dealt with these false heresies during his lifetime and they are still around today. At least one of the problems with these man made ideas of religion and spirituality is that they are not acceptable to God. The apostle Paul clearly states in Colossians 2:16-23 that there is nothing acceptable in God's sight outside of being totally complete in Jesus Christ. Keeping the Law of Moses under the Old Covenant is not able to make anyone acceptable before God in Heaven. If Israel couldn't do it, why should we think that we could? Any one who thinks that some mystical experience with a higher knowledge from meditation to make them acceptable before God is meditating up the wrong tree. Finally, if you think that by denying the desires of the flesh you can become "godly" and acceptable before God- well, your wrong. Only in Christ Jesus can you come before God in Heaven and find His acceptance of your person.
I hope you will join us for this study in God's Word. It should help all of us appreciate more the completeness we have in Christ Jesus and the futility of trying to be good enough on our own before God.
See you Sunday at 9:30am.
